Stress

The exact definition of stress is a natural adaptive response to an event. We most often talk about maladaptive stress, with its attendant physical symptoms that impact our health, our emotions, our mental state... and our behavior.

Physical symptoms of stress:

The most common physical symptoms of stress are sweating, trembling, dizziness, rapid heart rate, tension, pain (headaches, muscle aches, joint pain, chest tightness), and lack of sleep. Health risks include cardiovascular risks.

Emotional symptoms of stress:

The main emotional symptoms of stress are irritability, anxiety, fatigue, and depression. Health risks include exhaustion, 'burnout', and depression. and depression.

Mental Symptoms of Stress:

The most important mental symptoms of stress are overthinking, constant worry, chronic pessimism, and difficulty concentrating and making decisions.

Behavioral Symptoms of Stress:

The main behavioral symptoms of stress are the tendency to 'zap' and be constantly overwhelmed, withdrawal, aggression, and isolation. Health risks include addictions to food, tobacco, coffee, alcohol, and medication.

There are several phases of stress:

1) The alarm phase

This is the confrontation with an event perceived as dangerous; we are in the acute stress stage.

We go above the normal resistance level.

Dopamine and norepinephrine are neurotransmitters that secrete adrenaline to mobilize our body's resources.

2) The adaptation phase

When stress becomes frequent, our body must adapt to 'go the distance'.

We are always above the normal resistance level; our body secretes excess of the hormone called cortisol, which is the other stress hormone, to use up our resources and consume our energy reserves. This hormone is linked to blood pressure and the immune system.

It is during this phase that we may tend to consume calming or stimulating products and develop eating disorders.

3) The exhaustion phase

Too much stress for too long, and we reach the stage of chronic stress. Our resistance level declines. Our body is overwhelmed and no longer controls the stress reaction, our energy reserves are depleted. This leads to exhaustion, which is characterized by fatigue, often marked from the morning.

This is where the most marked symptoms of stress appear: digestive and cardiovascular disorders, MSDs (musculoskeletal disorders), with an impact on psychological and mental health: mood disorders, insomnia, depression, etc.
